Really? I'm researching antifungals and this is the first time I've seen this. It needs a citation.

I'm currently writing a thesis (I'm an MD currently working on my MSc) on the subject of a new antifungal drug and read quite a few articles on the subject. First of all, the commenters above are correct about the effects of azole drugs on affecting steroid production in mammalian cells (Zarn JA et al. Azole fungicides affect mammalian steroidogenesis by inhibiting sterol 14 alpha-demethylase and aromatase. Environ Health Perspect 2003;111:255-61 among others). The clinical impact of this adverese effect is not much documented and isn't given much consideration in real life's clinic (although it may have to do with the anti-hair lossing properties of some azoles).

Also, I don't understand why fluconazole is listed as a topical triazole on the chart at the bottome of the article. Fluconazole is noted as being the first widely used systemic triazole, used extensivily on AIDS patients with cryptococcal infections (note Mitchell TG, Perfect JR. Cryptococcosis in the era of AIDS--100 years after the discovery of Cryptococcus neoformans. Clin Microbiol Rev 1995;8:515-48 among others).
