Creation[edit]

Dear Editors,

I created this page last year and it was deleted because it was feared that it was too commercial and appropedia had not gained enough significance. I have augmented the page to fix these problems and am now resubmitting. First, Appropedia is a non-profit and I am not aware of any way anyone really gains commercially from the site - everything is gnu-fdl. If you have concerns about my wording - please edit or just cut out the offensive language rather than axing the entire page. I pulled the history page from the site.

Secondly, in the last year appropedia has gained objective significance by both being used as a source in the literature (I gave some examples - but you can check Google Scholar yourself) and most interestingly as a tool for service learning. This makes appropedia more than just some website - it is an active tool for teaching students about development while also directly improving the application of appropriate technology.

Cheers --Enviro1 (talk) 15:06, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for creating the page. I'll refrain from adding to the page, since I'm associated with Appropedia, but I might trim some of the details that seem a bit unnecessary for a Wikipedia article, and make it slightly shorter. Anything else I think of I'll put on this talk page. --Chriswaterguy talk 16:37, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Full disclosure: I made some changes, especially culling some stuff of minor significance relating to my work - I don't want this to be seen as a vanity page. If people want all the details, they can read the About page on Appropedia, which I also added under external links.
It needs more work, and I think more culling of non-notable details, but I wanted to stick to obvious, non-controversial improvements, lest there be seen to be a conflict of interest. Noting that it's not actually forbidden to edit an article where there's a potential conflict of interest, and the fact that I've mainly removed excess stuff about myself, and avoided changing anything about other people, should make it clear that this was mainly for "advancing the aims of Wikipedia" (to quote the COI guidleine) rather than a self-promotional edit. However, I'll leave it to other Wikipedia editors to make the judgments about which edits to keep or revert.
In short, I think it's a little ambiguous how this edit fits with the COI guideline, but I figure that clearly improving the article from an encyclopedic standpoint, including removing potential "vanity" content, shouldn't be controversial (WP:IAR and all that). Over to other editors. --Chriswaterguy talk 18:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Another disclosure (and nothing controversial I think): I made another couple of changes - removed link brackets for person not likely to have article about them; rm link to old (1998) and a probably-not-notable list of appropriate technology sites. --Chriswaterguy talk 15:43, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

How about an undelete[edit]

How about the article is undeleted as well, so other editors can get credit for their contributions to Wikipedia. See: here and here. Emesee (talk) 20:40, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

The deletions here on Wikipedia really suck sometimes...--Kozuch (talk) 23:05, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm all for a different deletion policy (like moving pages, history intact, to userspace). In this case, it might be hard to convince an admin to do the fiddling required to reinstate the deleted revisions - not a bad thing to do, but maybe not worth pursuing. --Chriswaterguy talk 00:31, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Removal of blatant original research[edit]

I removed the following from the article, as it is in clear violation of no original research:

Citing people's talk pages is most definitely original research and is not suitable for use as a source. Wickethewok (talk) 07:18, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Good call - I didn't want to edit too much, but it's good to have it removed. --Chriswaterguy talk 15:43, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Please add link, rm section[edit]

To avoid perceptions of conflict of interest I don't want to edit too much, but I'd like to suggest:

Thanks! --Chriswaterguy talk 03:13, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Sometimes it's easier just to do it :-). I don't see a COI problem with doing pretty NPOV edits like this, and maybe no one saw the note, so I made these changes. I'm adopting a "zero revert" policy on this page though - if someone changes my edits, that's fine and I'm not going to revert. --Chriswaterguy talk 04:52, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Remove notability query?[edit]

Is it time to remove the notability template? Is notability still in doubt? 117.18.231.44 (talk) 01:26, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

I don't think it's in doubt, and I'm also not sure in what sense it's written like an advertisement. But I have a conflict of interest so I'll leave the editing to someone else. --Chriswaterguy talk 07:11, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Founders: correction[edit]

Small points: The founder of the website is Lonny Grafman; the Appropedia Foundation was founded a short time later (<12 months) with these founding directors: Lonny Grafman, Chris Watkins (me) and Curt Beckmann.

FWIW, current directors are Lonny Grafman, Chris Watkins, Curt Beckmann and Andrew Lamb.

I won't edit directly as I have a COI. --Chriswaterguy talk 07:11, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

References[edit]

I'm avoiding editing due to COI, so when I'll add any relevant sources here. -Chriswaterguy talk 13:13, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
