I nominate the following sentence to one of the stupidest sentences on Wikipedia: "Its use is preferred over ATM in some countries because ATM has no convenient acronym expansion in the local language". Wow. The reason it's called anything else than ATM must of course be that they wanted to call it ATM, but couldn't because it didn't expand to anything meaningful in the local language. People whose native language isn't English are so awfully quaint. I won't change this since this is the en wiki, I'll leave that to one of the proud imperialists.
- Yeah, I actually wanted to write the same on reading that! Moreover, first I hear of "ATM" being used in Eastern Europe. In Poland it's definitely "bankomat" - I can't think of any equivalents in Polish. I don't know about other countries, though I know that there is a tendency in former Yugoslavian Republics to used English and English-derived words in everyday speech, especially concerning some more "modern" phenomena.
