What is biotechonomy? I have never heard of it, and am surprised to learn that it is a widely used synonym of anything.
definition
[edit]The European Bioeconomy in 2030 -publication offers a very different definition: "Bioeconomy refers to the sustainable production and conversion of biomass into a range of food, health, fibre and industrial products and energy." Jankunnas (talk) 18:06, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps this definition from the European Bioeconomy in 2030 is more clear and complete than those definitions that heavily reference biotechnology and 'economic activity derived from scientific and research activity'. Of course traditional sectors such as agriculture and forestry are part of biotechnology as defined here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biotechnology, however the construction of such a biotechnology heavy definition may lead a reader to feel broader activities such as forestry and agriculture or other more established economic activities based on the use of materials from our biosphere are not included in the bioeconomy. I have seen government agencies and scientific articles referencing both the narrower and broader definitions. Perhaps some clarifications could be made. Icedbuddha (talk) 02:30, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Bioeconomy does definitely include biotechnology - incorporation of biotechnology does belong within bioeconomy, as an incorporation of information belongs to the operation of offices. - Arnljótur Bjarki Bergsson — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.208.252.241 (talk) 10:26, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Why is biggest world economy related article removed?
[edit]April 2012 President Barack Obama of the United States announced intentions to encourage biological manufacturing methods, with a National Bioeconomy Blueprint.[1] 141.218.35.38 (talk) 01:28, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- "Bioeconomy" and the related concept "biobased economy" appear only in the title. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 05:39, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Added info
[edit]I added: Comparison of fossil fuel and biobased economy
- With a fossil fuel economy substances as gasoline, fuel oil, diesel, naphta, kerosine, LPG, and other are converted to: energy, chemical products, food, materials
- With a biobased economy substances as (syn)gas, sugars, oil, fibres and other are converted to energy, chemical products, (animal) food, biomaterials
the idea however (in which I succeeded only partially) is to have more information on what substance/compounds (ie sugars) are converted more to energy, food or materials. Ie several things can be used for a variery of things, depending on the production method or bioorganism used. Ie sugars can be converted to certain plastics as poly lactic acid (PLA), or can be used as food. Perhaps schematics are needed for this
Still to mention: styrene (from biomass), polyethylene (from biomass), ethylene glycol (ie for use in PET and polyethylenefurane), polyhydroxyalkaneoates
