Please refer to this discussion on my talk page about the differences between bootleg recordings and pirate/counterfeit copies. There is an annoyingly frequent number of times when the term "bootleg" is incorrectly used. - Aaron Jethro 03:12, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

In what sense is it "technically incorrect" to call a musical track made from two or more sources a 'bootleg'? In many instances it is the term preferred by makers of the music; it can also - to a greater or lesser extent - act as a stylistic, cultural or geographical marker.
