I suggest (and Carroll was a family member) that Liberal would be a better phrase to discribe his politics. Hugh's drug problems didn't change his attitude, he had already been moderatly anti-drug, it just increased his stand. I suspect I will change "left wing" to "liberal"

Carroll knew how to play Archie, and Archie's relationship with "meat-head". Since he and Nancy lived with Nancy's family while Carroll was attending college. Nancy's father, Ralph, was somewhat like Archie (although not blue-collar). Ralph 2March06

Main picture

Shouldn't the main picture for this article be a picture of Carroll O'Connor playing Archie Bunker, since that's incontrovertibly his most famous role? --Hnsampat 23:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Actually, the best picture would be a snapshot someone took before he died. If they upload such a picture and release it under a free license, we wouldn't have the copyright issues the current image raises. —Elipongo (Talk|contribs) 18:47, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

The article is a mess

I did my best to straighten out a whole bunch of the TV series parts, but I see there are others in need of attention as well. I unfortunately don't have the time to mess with them right now; if anyone else wants to take a stab at it, that'd be great.

The problem is not only that much of this stuff is written in broken English, but also that there are no references for the information provided and a lot of it isn't even about O'Connor, but about other people or the projects he worked on. Hugh O'Connor Memorial Act:

The article states:

In April 1997 the Florida Senate unanimously passed The Hugh O'Connor Memorial Act, which allows people injured by drug dealers to sue for damages."

This is immediately preceded by:

After Hugh's death, O'Connor successfully lobbied to get the State of California to pass legislation that allows family members of an addicted person or anyone injured by a drug dealer's actions, including employers, to sue for reimbursement for medical treatment and rehabilitation costs. The law, known as the Drug Dealer Civil Liability Act in California, went into effect in 1997.

Eleven other states followed with similar legislation, which has been referred to as The Hugh O'Connor Memorial Law.

Later life

Made some minor copy edits, but they haven't shown up, even in the edit log. I thought I'd begun to understand this process. Is there a built-in delay before edits "go live?"

(I also corrected the spelling of "Carroll, above, 3x. If we're going to call ourselves editors, we can at least spell the man's name correctly: Carol is the feminine, and I've never seen Caroll anywhere for anyone, male or female.)

Ulick O'Connor

Very interesting article. I ended up here from the Ulick O'Connor article where it states that Carroll and Ulick were cousins. No mention of it here, though. I used to avidly watch In the Heat of the Night in the early 1990s so I was very interested in the fascinating history here about Carroll's time in Ireland, and his son's tragic death (presumably this was Hugh O'Connor, the cop in In the Heat of the Night?).
