Catherine Havasi

The Talk page for Luminoso is attached to the Draft: Catherine Havasi article.

I want to note that I have a WP:COI because I consult for Luminoso. However I am committed to all policies on disclosure, notability, a neutral point of view WP:NPOV, no advocacy, no marketing or PR WP:NOT, verifiability, independent reliable sources, etc.

With the Catherine Havasi article, I am lucky enough to be writing about a very interesting and important person in the world of artificial intelligence, with great sourcing.

My user page has more details about me, my WP:COI, and my pledge to attempt to stringently abide by all Wikipedia policies.Edsussman (talk) 18:51, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Edsussman

Notability

Libby norman and others:

Regarding the notability notice placed on this article by User: 67.186.133.197:

Notability of the subject of this article is based on her business accomplishments, not just her academic accomplishments. She was named to both the Fast Company magazine "100 Most Creative People in Business" list [1] and the Boston Business Journal's "40 Under 40", of business and civic leaders making a major impact in their respective fields in 2014. [2]

This article was extensively reviewed for notability by User: Libby norman and others during the AfC process and received a C-class on WikiProject Biography, WikiProject Business, WikiProject Computer science. All these projects find it notable. If there was doubt about the notability of the article, it would not have been rated or rated start class.

Regarding academic notability, this was discussed prior to publication while the article was being reviewed in AfC, but here's the recap:

Havasi also qualifies for WP:Academic specifically WP:NACADEMICS "The person's research has made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources." She is the director and co-founder of an academic project at MIT Media Lab called OMCS recognized by multiple relaiable sources as one of the leading programs, or the leading program in the field of artificial intelligence. [3][4] [5] [6].

Please also note criteria 7 of WP:NACADEMICS. "The person has made substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity." In this case, using her work at MIT Media Labs to co-found a notable venture-capital backed company, Luminoso.

This flag is the one and only contribution by User: 67.186.133.197, so I can't judge the editors experience. Taken on face value, the user has no experience, although I think it's obvious they have another user name and didn't sign in, probably by accident. I suggest the user sign in under their usual user name, so I can engage in a conversation with them here or on their user page.

I've noted and explained by WP:COI above, so I can't remove the flag myself. I'd ask that anyone reviewing this discussion, please remove the flag. ThanksEdsussman (talk) 19:23, 29 October 2015 (UTC)Edsussman

Thanks for your note (Edsussman), I agree with you that this subject qualifies and I'm not sure why the editor placed a flag without then starting a discussion here or giving us a means of contacting them. The subject has ample references and there is evidence from reputable media sources to back up the fact that she is not just an 'average scientist' whatever that is. I propose to give this 24 hours in case the poster cares to join in the debate. If we don't hear back by then with some solid reasoning I'll remove the flag. Modifying the lead

Hi Libby norman

I'd suggest modifying the opening sentence so it reads:

Catherine Havasi is an American scientist who specialises in artificial intelligence (AI) at MIT Media Lab [1] and is the co-founder and CEO if artificial intelligence company Luminoso.[2]

This way academics won't come along again and judge the article just based on academic notability when general notability is also established. Also, running Luminoso is her primary profession, according to the sources.

Thanks-Edsussman (talk) 19:35, 29 October 2015 (UTC)EdSussman

Sounds sensible to me. Libby norman (talk) 19:36, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
I have a WP:COI here so I don't do direct edits to the article. If it seems a good idea, perhaps you can add it when you come back to check the page. Many thanks. Edsussman (talk) 19:40, 29 October 2015 (UTC)Edsussman
