Article 49

[edit]

Article 49 reads: "The Members of the United Nations shall join in affording mutual assistance in carrying out the measures decided upon by the Security Council." What does this actually require members to do? Do they have to contribute military units to support UN missions, for instance, if called upon to do so? Text of Chapter VII

[edit]

The text should not be here as it is on wikisource see s:Charter of the United Nations#Chapter VII - Action with Respect to Threats to the Peace, Breaches of the Peace and Acts of Aggression

What should be here is a commentary as there is for Chapter I of the United Nations Charter or Geneva Convention (1929) --Philip Baird Shearer 10:47, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Enforceable on non-members?

[edit]

I'd like to know if Chapter 7 is enforceable on a non-UN member, and if so, under what legal justification. Does it matter if the country was a member and then gave up membership, as opposed to never having been a member?

I think this information would be an interesting addition to the article. Chapter 7 has been invoked in many conflicts. I find it strange that we don't have greater depth in an article devoted to this important convention.

Anyone with legal knowledge out there?Nojamus (talk) 18:09, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
