A lot more is known about comment spam than published here. It is a quite common affliction of blogs, and sites using the WordPress platform, which allow commenters to provide a website address along with their comment, which in turn may be picked up by search engine bots and boost the ranking of the linked page in search engine results. Defense mechanisms include Captcha etc, however they are often significantly obstructive to genuine human users. I haven't got time to cite references that would be considered reliable, sorry.
