compiz fusion[edit]

this is a genuine project which is quite important. It has recently had a name change which is why the new article has been made, i just wanted to get the ball rolling (it was marked as a stub) the reason i didn't contest the the first time was i was too slow (this is my first article) Rcxdude 15:58, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added the software infobox. But it needs logo , images and further improvement

Compiz Fusion is just as much a unique project that needs it's own page, as Beryl and Compiz are Sammi84 00:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They are deciding on a logo right now, also should Beryl and Compiz eventually redirect to this page? Since Compiz Fusion is the continuation of both projects. Skeith 15:56, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keeping in mind that Compiz still exists and it is only Beryl that has changed (into Compiz Fusion, a set of add-ons reliant upon the Compiz core), there is no reason for the Compiz article to redirect here. (It should link here, though.) So, I believe this page should either A) redirect to a Compiz Fusion section in the main Compiz article, or B) be briefly summarised there, with a link to this page as the "full article". Perhaps the Beryl page could provide historical information, while pointing here as well? Fyda 05:59, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Compiz Fusion shall be separate page[edit]

Compiz Fusion shall continue on a separate page untill Beryl completely transforms. Even after a full transformation, separate pages may be maintained for the sake of keeping historical record. Any redirection between Compiz, Beryl, or Compiz Fusion would be inappropriate.

Beryl did not completely merge with Compiz, Beryl just merged with the Compiz plugins (which will be called "Compiz Fusion"), but Compiz will add some of the core changes made by Beryl to the Compiz core.  Tcrow777  talk  22:12, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction[edit]

Hi, nothing on the page really describes what Compiz Fusion actually is. Basically it says that Compi Fusion is a collection of plugins for a window manager for some window system, it's made from two other plugins from a project called beryl that has nothing to do with the window manager, and that Beryl's all going to Compiz, and Beryl's gone, and...what's Beryl? What's an X Window System?

The French page, on the other hand, has a good explanation for the non-Linux user. Spanish has some information too. I'd write it myself but I don't use Linux (yet).

Compiz Fusion, a collection of plugins or a window manager?[edit]

"Compiz Fusion is a collection of plugins and a configuration system for the Compiz compositing window manager for the X Window System."

"Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon will use Compiz Fusion as the default window manager." --62.142.194.228 10:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First stable release[edit]

As asserted in Compiz Fusion 0.6.0 released!, 0.6.0 is the first stable release. I substituted preview with stable in infobox as it seems to me correct. I would like to add this info to the History section too Katanzag 14:24, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming or legitimate changes?[edit]

What I seem to gather from this article is that Compiz Fusion is the Beryl plugins added to the Compiz "core". But since Beryl is a Compiz offshoot, is this really just Beryl being renamed to "Compiz Fusion"? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.175.17.2 (talk) 15:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No; Beryl was a fork of the old Compiz (and thus, independent of Compiz). This is different from what Compiz Fusion is, which is a set of add-ons for Compiz (and thus, completely dependent upon Compiz). The structure/scope of these projects has changed over time, which may be why there is some misunderstanding over this.
Compiz consists of a core ("compiz-core"), upon which plugins rely. There was a set of basic plugins, which may be called Compiz plugins (because they always come with Compiz and are required for the most basic window manager functionality, eg. moving, resizing and decorating windows). Those basic plugins are now considered part of the Compiz project (for packaging and bug reporting purposes; they're also compiled together with the core).
There was also, historically, a Compiz Extras package/project, which contained additional, optional, and somewhat more experimental plugins for Compiz. This was not a part of Compiz proper, but was created/contributed to by the community surrounding Compiz.
As a fork of Compiz, Beryl contained a copy of the Compiz core, the Compiz plugins, and Compiz Extras. The essential distinction between Beryl and Compiz Fusion is here: Beryl had all the components (most crucially, the core) to be a complete Window Manager on its own. Compiz Fusion, on the other hand, is not a Window Manager; it consists only of what was previously known as Compiz Extras, merged with the changes and additional plugins which were developed within the Beryl project. Therefore, Compiz Fusion is in a dependent relationship with regards to Compiz (ie. it is strictly a set of add-ons, and therefore relies entirely upon Compiz), whereas Beryl was on the same hierarchal level as Compiz (ie. it didn't depend on Compiz, as it had its own modified version of the core). Fyda (talk) 05:44, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's obviously something I'm missing here. My understanding is that Beryl = Compiz + extras, and Compiz with Compiz Fusion = Compiz + extras. I'm guessing that Compiz has been improved after Beryl forked from it?ZappyGun (talk) 15:15, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Put bluntly, Compiz-Fusion is the current combined state of Beryl (which was entirely discontinued after the merge), Compiz Extras (which is now just the set of plugins outside of the core ones), and Compiz (the actual binary executable with some very small base plugins). Compiz Fusion = Compiz (Core) + Beryl + Compiz Extras. Truth be told, Compiz itself is now entirely part of Compiz-Fusion, it's all one project and the developers of each intermingle. We've been looking to fry the old site (compiz.org, etc.) for a while now, but haven't yet gone all the way with it (it's never updated and is usually full of spam) 76.189.178.118 (talk) 21:08, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More pictures?[edit]

It is in my belief that more demonstrative pictures should be added, possibly to show each (or a few) of the plugins. In its current state, the article is too much of a generic list of plugins. OasisGames (talk) 21:13, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Can someone put on pictures? Althepal (talk) 17:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get some more up, one for each plugin sound good? Might need to make a new table to list the plugins. OasisGames (talk) 23:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The page needs a lot of editing before I merge these, but: User:OasisGames/Compiz OasisGames (talk) 00:40, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As part of an effort to improve the article, we should move the plugins from a list into a table with a column for a screenshot, a column for the name of the plugin, a description, and the category. Maybe not quite in that order, but you get the point. OasisGames (talk) 02:46, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion[edit]

It is currently being debated whether the article should be expanded or not and in what ways. If you are for or against expansion of the article, say so and explain what you believe should be done to improve the article. Dropping the complete list of plugins has also been discussed with a majority agreement from the C-F web team (who try to remain unbiased, but will not be making the necessary adjustments to the article). The Merges of Compiz[edit]

As Compiz Fusion, Compiz++ and Nomad are going to be merged back into Compiz [1], we should merge back the articles Beryl, as it doesn't exist anymore, and Compiz Fusion into Compiz. --KDesk (talk) 18:55, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Compiz Fusion is not Compiz, that in iteself should be reason itself to keep the two seperate. But also, merging the two together would cause confusion for those unaware of either and what the difference. I do agree with other above that more details need to be added, especially since the two are not that same thing, as described here: http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/CompizFusionVsCompiz ---Unknown User —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.16.80.196 (talk) 02:38, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The homepage at http://www.compiz.org says "What was Compiz Fusion?". Compiz Fusion as a separate entity from Compiz is a thing of the past. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.144.161.80 (talk) 08:25, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
