I would like to see at least one example of this word used in a sentence. Is it a noun, verb or both? Jamiem 18:46, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Especially given the example given (re 'just deserts') is spelled wrong, and should be 'just desserts'.DermottBanana (talk) 00:11, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Spelling / Pronunciation
[edit]I concur. 'Desert' (DEZ-ert) refers to an arid locale. 'Dessert' (duh-ZERT) refers to the last course of a meal, or a reward. I therefore propose changing the spelling used in this article to 'dessert'. LorenzoB (talk) 04:19, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
I disagree... You can argue all you want about the spelling of your deserts, but, in the end, it won't change your desserts... however, despite this, and whether you deserve it or not, deserving to get something has nothing whatsoever to do with getting it. Spelling
[edit]I have fixed all of the misspellings of "dessert" (please note my use of omission in the reason for my edit because I wasn't logged in), but can someone please fix the spelling of the page title?
Etymology
[edit]The etymology used for "deserve" that linked it to "desert" was entirely incorrect, as "deserve" and "dessert" share common French origins and do not share an origin with the dry arid area known as a "desert" as was originally claimed. Corrections were made to reflect the proper etymology in the first paragraph of the Nomenclature section with sources cited. Other sources such as the Wiktionary and other dictionaries that show etymologies are also available should they be needed.
Additionally there needs to be additional clarification as to how "deserve" and the noun form "desert" are connected, if someone can find and cite a source for the nominalization of the word "deserve" that shows it becomes desert and not dessert would go a long way to fixing any confusion, but I can't seem to find any. — Preceding Seiwaltz (talk) 00:24, 31 October 2024 (UTC) comment added by Seiwaltz (talk • contribs) 23:50, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
