Rules

[edit]

None of the rules I've read on the internet for Dirty Clubs makes much sense. This is the way I was raised playing it in Wisconsin. After dealing and if a club card isn't turned up on the remaining deck, the player to the left of the dealer can bid, each subsequent player has an opportunity to out bid the first bidder. Bidding only goes around the table once. This makes the game more challenging since you have to weigh how high to go on the bid so you don't get out bid but low enough that you can get that many tricks. The high bidder gets to name the suit of trump. The other players then have to declare if they are in or out of that hand. If in, they have to get a least one trick or suffer a 5 point penalty. The high bidder has to capture at least the number of tricks they bid or suffer a 5 point penalty as well. This is known as a "set" or "bump". If a club card is turned up, clubs are automatically trump and everyone has to play. Any one that does win a trick receives is "bumped" and 5 more points are added to their total to get "out". When a club is up the person left of the dealer starts the play. The high bidder also gets to start the play. This also makes sense since the high bidder may be playing against numerous opponents. First player to get 15 pints or tricks, if they have been set or bumped, wins the game. If you are set or bumped an additional 5 points is added to your tally before you cancel out.
