Redirect where?

[edit]

I just reverted a change in redirect from European Union to Eu (disambiguation). I see there is sort of a very slow edit war over this (just a few reverts per year). So it needs to be settled. Surely, by far most people who type in 'eu' will be looking for the EU. Right? DirkvdM 19:56, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Eu" does not seem a likely match for "EU". People might be looking for the town in France, or for the element Europium, at the very least. I'm reverting. john k 22:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, there will be some people looking for the French village or the element or what have you, but what matters is what will most people expect. I'm pretty sure that at the vast majority of people typing 'eu' (both lowercase, which is automatically changed to 'Eu') will mean 'EU'. So I'll revert again. Isn't there a way to determine how often each entry was clicked when 'eu' redirected to 'EU'? DirkvdM 09:40, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That something is, by a small margin, the most common meaning does not mean that it gets the redirect. "Eu" does not clearly refer to the EU at all. "eu" may, but so what? If somebody clicks on it, they get a disambiguation page, and can click right through to the EU article. For anybody looking for another meaning, they have to click through multiple pages. Also note that most links to Eu appear to be to the French town. When in doubt, send it to the disambiguation page. I'm reverting again. john k 17:25, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with john k and will redirect to Eu (disambiguation). Moonraker (talk) 00:22, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(Retired user): This is a tad silly. I wager that very nearly every search for "EU" is for the European Union, rather than Star Wars Expanded Edition, say, or Edinburgh University. 131.111.185.45 (talk) 21:14, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
