Names

[edit]

@Sakuav: Dear colleague, what was the rationale behind removing multiple alternative names in English, all of which are actuallu used in the WP:RS? There is nothing wrong with, for example, Ford Motor Company (commonly known as Ford). Викидим (talk) 23:42, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Викидим: Thank you for your message. Although the source mentions Geely Space and Geely Satellites, these names are not commonly used for Geespace. They are overly generic and can lead to confusion. For instance, "Geely Space" might imply a broader focus on space-related activities by Geely, perhaps even a cars dealership, rather than the company Geespace. Similarly, "Geely Satellites" could be interpreted as referring to individual satellites rather than the company as a whole.
For example, we wouldn't write "Matford, also known as Mathis Ford, Ford France" because it introduces unnecessary complexity and potential confusion. By only mentioning "Geespace" in the lead, we provide clarity and avoid these issues. (ref MOS:LEADCLUTTER)
Of course, styles can be a matter of preference. Happy to discuss more. Sakuav (talk) 03:35, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about "Spacetime Daoyu"? It is frequently used and not confusing. Викидим (talk) 03:53, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Викидим Regarding the name "Spacetime Daoyu", I believe it's not an ideal choice for inclusion due to it being a mistranslation of the company's Chinese name.
When translating Chinese company names, the convention is to keep the romanization of the main part of the name, while translating postfixes such as "科技 (Technology)", "有限公司 (Co. Ltd.)", or "集团 (Group)". The company's full Chinese name is 浙江时空道宇科技有限公司, which breaks down as follows:
  • 浙江 (Zhejiang): The location where the company is registered
  • 时空道宇 (Shikong Daoyu): The main part of the company name, which should be directly romanized using Pinyin
  • 科技 (Technology): A postfix indicating the company's focus
  • 有限公司 (Co. Ltd.): A postfix denoting the company's legal structure
The correct translation would be "Zhejiang Shikong Daoyu Technology Co., Ltd." However, some sources mistakenly translate "Shikong" to "Spacetime", which is why "Spacetime Daoyu" appears in some articles. The fact that your source corrected this issue from the article it cite demonstrates its reliability.
Given the potential for confusion and the fact that it's a mistranslation, I believe it's best to omit "Spacetime Daoyu". We should prioritize clarity and accuracy, especially when introducing the company to readers who may not be familiar with it. Sakuav (talk) 20:30, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, it is not up to us to judge what is the correct way to spell the company name in English. If WP:RS use some name, we can list it in our article. If particular (mis)spelling is popular in otherwise good sources, we need to report it. That said, I really do not care much about Geespace anyhow (got involved with it only through WP:NPP), and am quitting this discussion. Викидим (talk) 00:10, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your perspective on this matter. You raise a valid point about respecting the names used by reliable sources, even if they may be considered misspellings or mistranslations. Our role is to report the information as it appears in those sources, rather than making judgments about the correct way to spell a company's name in English.
I agree with you that the name listed in your source, "Zhejiang Shikong Daoyu Technology Co., Ltd.," is indeed the correct translation based on the conventions for Chinese company names. I apologize if my previous message came across as arguing against your position; that was not my intention.
Thank you for your contributions to the article through WP:NPP and for engaging in this discussion. Your input has been valuable. If you ever want to revisit the topic or have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Sakuav (talk) 20:39, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
