GA Review[edit]

Reviewer: QatarStarsLeague (talk · contribs) 19:03, 27 January 2013 (UTC) I will review this article. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 19:03, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was searching for images of the extinct Bubal hartebeest, and found this public domain image of the various subspecies, which might be useful: [1] Could be placed under taxonomy, if the range map is placed in the taxobox. FunkMonk (talk) 22:27, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to QatarStarsLeague for taking up the review, and to FunkMonk for giving that great image. Well, I have an idea - as the Taxonomy part tells only about the ranges of the subspecies, then let the range map be there; we could use your suggested image in the Physical description part, because the appearance of the subspecies is much discussed here (the existing image of Red hartebeest can be removed). It would look so realistic. What do you say? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 13:29, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree. It would be a better representation of the Red Hartebeest. Also, the review will start in a short while. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 16:00, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, sounds cool! Such classical comparison images are kind of rare on Wikipedia. FunkMonk (talk) 16:20, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will put it up so. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

"Their diet consists mainly of grass" But can include...? I know you elaborate elsewhere in the article, but it would be nice if you could add just a couple alternate food sources in the lead.

I have added a line about grasses they eat throughout the year. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"The Bubal hartebeest has been declared extinct..." "...was declared extinct..."

Done. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Formerly the hartebeest was widespread in Africa." Comma after formerly.

Done. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Within the lead, I ask that you wikilink savanna, gestational period, Peter Simon Pallas (if bio exists). I also personally think all of the countries should be wikilinked, but that is entirely relative to your discretion. Another thing at your discretion, the eight subspecies of the hartebeest listed in the lead.

I have linked all except the countries and subspecies. I think it will be overlinking, and, anyway, countries have nothing special to do with this. As of the subspecies, I link them in the "Taxonomy", so why relink? Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:39, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All else is good!

Infobox[edit]

This is great.

Etymology[edit]

I love the recording of the first mention in South African literature, but could you provide the translation for Riebeeck's passage, whether the original text be in Afrikaans or Dutch.

I tried to get the translation (it is in Dutch, the text) from Google Translate. But it is not so clear. Mentions something like someone addressing "Master Pieter" having shot "Hadde" (really, where does the hartebeest come in!) Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:45, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Everything is fine!

Taxonomy and evolution[edit]

Could you provide a reference for the P.S. Pallas line?

It is the MSW3 reference, the whole paragraph is based on it. I have used it twice, so perhaps it would be redundant to use it repeatedly.

Everything else is great, but could you add a reference for the sites mentioned in South Africa and Zimbabwe, if such articles exist?

I have added a reference at the end, haven't I? Or do you mean linking the sites? In the latter case I should tell you I found all of them redlinks. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Subspecies[edit]

This is a very nice section, and you eloquently expound the denominations of hartebeests. The only remark besides exalt I have is that you add a wikilink for each African nation mentioned just once.

Thank you. Done. Sainsf <^>Talk all words

Genetics and hybrids[edit]

The geographical features listed in Kenya and Ethiopia probably need wikilinks, but besides that this is a fine section.

I have linked all of them, just that Lambwe Valley is a redlink. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 12:58, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Description[edit]

I love the photographic compendium of the hartebeest subspecies. I will hold of on reviewing any further to allow you time to allay the slight problems I listed. Superb so far! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 16:00, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your encouragement! I have replied and fixed all as you wanted. You can put all your comments at once, I don't take too much time to go through them. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 13:00, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • My only epistle for this section would be a wikilink for pedicle. All else is good.
I could not find a proper link here for the "Pedicle", so I added a bit of explanation after that. I hope that would suffice. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:20, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Parasites[edit]

"Hartebeest are known to share parasites with gazelles and wildebeest." Does this mean the the parasite that inhabit gazelles and wildebeests are analogous to those that subside in/on hartebeests, or do somehow the parasites alternate between living off the different ungulates.
Everything else is good.

Interpreting the text of the citation, it must be the second meaning. I have added it. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:28, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ecology and behavior[edit]

The material is fine but I would think wikilinks are appropriate for the term "diurnal", and the listed predators.

done. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:30, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Diet[edit]

This section is free from issues.

Reproduction[edit]

This section is fine.

Habitat and distribution[edit]

As you have already wikiliked the countries the hartebeest is extant in, the wikilink I ask be added is that of Mt. Kenya, unless it has been wikilinked prior in the article.

It has already been linked in "Genetics and Hybrids". Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:31, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Status and conservation[edit]

Excellent section!

Uses[edit]

Please link to Qua-Qua region, if such an article exists. All else is great.

Sorry, no such link exists. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:32, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Conclusion[edit]

I very much enjoyed perusing and offering a review on this article. When the requested changes are made, I will pass this article. Congratulations! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 20:43, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot again for your nice words. I have replied to all issues. Well, let me tell you, that I plan to have this article in for a copyedit at GOCE, and then, if it gets a successful copyedit, head for FAC. I just wished to know if you have any ideas about this article's FAC, which I could use for its improvement. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 01:37, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for passing the article! It has been a great review. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 11:42, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
