Are telescope handling procedures appropriate here?

[edit]

While warnings about looking at the Sun through a telescope can never be repeated too often, is this article the right place to do it? --Mortense (talk) 23:29, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hartmann mask was not invented as a focusing tool.

[edit]

Nowadays Hartmann mask is used primarily as a focusing aid by amateur astronomers. However, it is only because amateur telescopes have small, easily accessible apertures and mirrors, that Hartmann mask is not useful for its original purpose. Hartmann mask was invented to check the quality of the optical surface, especially for large non-spherical mirrors. See for example [1] Nowadays in professional telescope making it has been completely superseded by interferometric methods, which is why it is difficult to track down information outside historical optics texts. All the more reason to include this information in a Wikipedia article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morycm (talkcontribs) 17:54, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
