There are substantial differences between coaching and psychotherapy. First, is the level of training. Individuals trained in providing psychotherapy are psychologists and have years of training and supervision ultimately earning the highest degree in mental health field, their doctorate.Individuals trained in health coaching typically have earned a certificate through as little as six weeks of training. Second, psychologists who provide behavioral health interventions in a medical environment have often obtained additional training in health psychology and equipped to handle complex cases in which patients have multiple psychosocial stressors and/or chronic conditions. Coaches, however, are trained to solve relatively simple solutions to behavioral health problems, those which are rarely found in the primary care environment. Third, psychologists are trained to follow an ethics code developed by the American Psychological Association that serves to protect patient rights and ensure that psychologists are engaging in ethical work aimed only at benefiting the patient. Similarly, psychologists are governed by the APA and their work is monitored ensuring that those providing psychotherapy are meeting the highest standards of care. Health coaches have no such ethical standards or governing body to ensure quality care.
