The article says "the first manufacturer to use "scuba"". That may be the first known all-lowercase use in a company publication, but likely divers and others were pronouncing SCUBA as a word, and in such semi-unofficial casual publications as scuba clubs' internal periodicals not being maximum careful with spelling and case of letters, for a long time before that.
