Where is sunlight and the enviornment in relation to all of this?

Hi guys, I'm qite new to this, but I took a science class in high school, and the teacher talked about how cold/dark vs sunny/humid climates causes the skin to adapt to its enviornment based mostly on the amount of sunlight/heat/cold in order to protect the body, and how he said this was the only reason for change in skin tone, which we determine as genetic differences? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.198.45.47 (talk) 04:32, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

I don't think that temperature is involved, but sunlight is. Human_skin_color#Evolution_of_skin_color explains how our genetic differences in skin colour evolved to suit people to different amounts of sunshine. So we seem to have that covered. ϢereSpielChequers 12:23, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Inheritance and skin colour

Question for the experts, that probably should be addressed in the article: Unlike many other characteristics, skin colour appears to dilute when parents have dissimilar skin tones, so that the child is usually(?) of an intermediate skin tone. The assumption I read is that there are multiple copies of the genes that produce skin colour, widely distributes across the human genome. Therefore on average, a child will inherit about half the genes from each parent and exhibit an intermediate result. This is in contrast to eye colour as an example, where the colours do not mix. Comments on how true this is? Is skin colour also regulated by the intensity/concentration output of some genes over others, or simple the number of melanin-producing genes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.216.30.185 (talk) 04:28, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
