The code for ' (transliteration of soft sign) in the name

Unicode suggests the more specialized character ʹ for this purpose (that is a modifier letter, that is, a part of the word, according to the categorization, unlike an apostrophe punctuation mark). (See also the note.)

And remarkably, the Google Search results even improved with the new spelling (that was a thing to worry about when doing such renaming): 15,100 for Mel'čuk (conventional ') vs. 71,300 for Melʹčuk (new). --Imz 22:43, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
