Talk:Jungles of Iran

In response to the article, "Jungles of Iran," it must be noted that, as a prehistoric Indo-European word, "jungle" generally means any large, heavily wooded area that includes, in English, "jungle" as well as "forest." In the Persian dictionary there is not a specific word for "forest," so the Iranians call their Northern forests: "jangal"---the word that can easily be mistranslated as "jungle." Instead of saying in English "Jungles of Iran," the proper term should be "Forests of Iran." The climatic element is essential for choosing "forest," since, in spite of the subtropical temperature in the Summer, this region is covered by snow in the Winter. I would favor merging with Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests and making this a redirect. The merge proposal from last August seems to have received no attention - so here's some attention, in part based on the seeming misnomer pointed out above by user:ChosroesIV. The Alborz mountains and its northern slopes are naturally covered by snow in the winter but the narrow strip along the Caspian coast not. For the climatic information, see e.g. [1]: January mean daily high (10.8°C) gives no chance for snow to accumulate. I am not very sure but I think the iranian word "jangal" derives from the english word "jungle". "Forests of Iran" would not be a proper name for this article, because there are also other (more sparsely) forested regions in Iran, like oak forests in Zagros Mountains. A better term would be e.g. "Forests of Northern Iran". However, I would, like Vsmith, favor merging this article with Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests, because the Jungles of Iran article does not give any additional information.Krasanen (talk) 10:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
