Many have wondered why the Kraken Scale is shaped like a mantaray and not liken the traditional squid or octopus. My theory is that this is a deliberate hommage to Osamu Tezuka's classic manga and anime "Astro Boy", where indeed a monstrous mantaray called Kraken appears in one of the stories (episode 36 in the 1980 anime series "The Monster Of Kraken", often mistranslated as "The Monster of Clarken"). It is the only other appearance of a mantaray-type Kraken I know of, and given Osamu Tezuka's stature as a god among mangaka, it would be perfectly natural for Masami Kurumada to reference him.
