The article currently states that Cedric, his mother and Mary live "in genteel poverty in 1880s Brooklyn". Leaving aside the timing issue (I'll comment on that later), I wonder where the author of this passage takes the information that they live in Brooklyn. The film excplicitly states that they live in Hester Street, and there is a well-known street of that name on the Lower East Side of Manhattan - then and now an immigrants' neightbourhood. I'm not sure if there is also a Hester Street in Brookly, but I think the one in Manhattan would serve the purpose of the story very well. 62.226.74.139 (talk) 14:09, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not only that; in the 1880s, "New York City" was just Manhattan - Brooklyn was a separate city (the consolidation that merged the other four boroughs into New York City occurred in 1898). The novel, finished in 1886, does mention New York but not Brooklyn, which it would have done had Brooklyn been intended. I'll amend the passage. SchnitteUK (talk) 10:04, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
