How local is local

Too technical

I added the {{Technical}} template. I studied physics and take an interest in astronomy, yet there are several things in this short article that I don't understand:

  • Relative to what is "the LSR velocity" measured?
  • What are Θ0 and V?
  • In what sense is there "significant correlation" between the motions listed?
  • What is "the predicted counterrotation of star-forming regions"?

Some of these may actually be problems of vagueness rather than technicality. Some further problems that I can't remedy because I don't understand enough of the article:

  • It's unclear how the value "anywhere from 202–241 km/s" for the LSR velocity is derived from the cited source, which specifies several different values (with standard deviations). (In any case, "anywhere from X-Y" doesn't work; it should either be "in the range X-Y" or "anywhere from X to Y", and in the latter case the uncertainty implied by "anywhere" should be explained.)
  • How can there be "local estimates of the velocity of the LSR based on stars in the vicinity of the Sun" when the LSR "follows the mean motion of material in the Milky Way in the neighborhood of the Sun"?
