Question[edit]

"is an organ (anatomy) for animal locomotion. examples: , fin (anatomy), tail (anatomy), Acetabulum (morphology), Mantle (mollusc), Sucker (zoology). Sometimes confused with / See also wing (anatomy), flagellum, leg, Siphon (mollusc) "

Is there a way to get these links from this term.. stub article? it's really like a glossary def or search index, but I know wikipedia officially 'discourages' that.

It doesn't fit as a section in animal locomotion (I tried that, and someone deleted it), there's also organ (anatomy) but again, its hard to make it flow in that article.

Hi MfortyoneA, thank you for your interest in improving Wikipedia! Two thoughts come to mind:
  1. Upon reviewing organ (anatomy), it doesn't appear that legs, wings, etc. are organs.
  2. There already is an article, animal locomotion, one can link to.
I would propose to make this article a redirect there (although I feel that it really should be deleted, because of the apparent misnomer).

ok thanks. Maybe it is indeed strictly a misnomer as you say. The phrase locomotory organ is in my head in that context, and I have found it all over the place.. so it's not just me. Does a redirect not have value in providing correction; if such a mistake is common.. information in wikipedia should be able to help people correct that. hmm: I'm not so sure it's clear cut. there's internal organs and external organs. Acetabulum (morphology) is an explicit example of something that seems to be described as a locomotory organ ("Acetabulum /æsᵻˈtæbjᵿləm/ (plural acetabula) in invertebrate zoology is a saucer-shaped organ of attachment "). If that is an organ, I think a leg might be aswell? MfortyoneA (talk) 12:00, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok you are right. [[1]] a leg is a limb or an apendage, not an organ.
The fact that confusion exists suggests to me it would be helpful to have either Wikipedia or Wiktionary stating exactly what a locomotory organ IS, (and ISn't).. MfortyoneA (talk) 12:03, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, here's vindication of the term of art, "locomotory organ": Beckett, B. S. (1986). Biology: A Modern Introduction. Oxford University Press. p. 307. ISBN 9780199142606.. I believe that you can draw on this and other references from a Google book search of "locomotory organs of animals" to make an entry in Wiktionary. Redirect[edit]

I've redirected this to Animal locomotion, where I made a cited statement in the lead that defines "locomotory organ". User:HopsonRoad 15:16, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
