Tuesday, January 27, 2009: It was announced that the Loretto High School of Sacramento will be closing at the end of this 2009 year due to the declining enrollment. There was, in previous years, an enrollment of 560 students at Loretto High. Currently there are 389. In the past Loretto would attract an average of 175 eighth grade students to take the Admission Exam. This year only 80 applied. These are difficult times, and the economy has undeniably been declining. The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) has reached the decision that without enough students, this Loretto branch must be closed. All of the eighth graders, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors that were planning on, or already enrolled at Loretto now must find a new school for next year. St. Francis High School, another all-girls Catholic school, is trying their hardest to accomodate these girls, but there isn't enough room for everyone. Another Sacramento Catholic high school, the co-ed Christian Brothers, is also making efforts in attempts to accomodate these girls.
