Gray Jays

In response to a request for citation, I have removed the colloquial names Gorby and moose-bird from this article. Maine woodsmen I knew from the early 20th century used those two names rather than the others listed in the Gray Jay article; but that article carries the same request for a reference citation. I'll re-enter the information if I can find an acceptable reference.Thewellman (talk) 07:03, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Main Photo

I used the photo because the article had none. Topography and vegetative density of the region make it relatively unusual to find an intermediate distance image showing water and vegetation typical of the area. Water features seem to be more accurately portrayed by high angle aerial photos, while vegetation details are best from ground level. It is difficult to capture the expanse of relatively level terrain from ground photos, while aerial photos do so at the expense of vegetative details. I would certainly welcome other images; but this image should probably be retained as an illustration of magnitude and effects of historical river driving which may not be available in more modern images.Thewellman (talk) 15:57, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

It's not the "Maine North Woods".

Hey guys. I'm not very good at editing, and this would be a very extensive change, but, as a lifelong resident of the area, I gotta say, NOBODY calls it the 'Maine North Woods'. It's the North Maine Woods. I changed it in a few places, but I don't know how to change titles.

Interesting comment from a first-time anonymous editor (whose word we can't take, of course - sources needed!)

He/she seems correct from what I can see: Appalachian Mountain Club's site, for example, has one reference to "Maine North Woods" and pages of references to "North Maine Woods". The only organization online with the name that I can find is, indeed, North Maine Woods (http://www.northmainewoods.org) - even though our link to it gives it the wrong initials.

The region is often called just the Maine Woods (as in the fight over the proposed federal park) and in sentence form is often referred to as "Maine's North Woods" - but that isn't the same thing as the title of this article; it's just an ordinary possessive construction, like "Maine's coastline".

So unless anybody objects (I'll wait a couple days) I will Move this article to North Maine Woods. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 11:33, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
