good stub, now let's pick it to pieces

The main illustration's orle is rather thinner than I'd prefer; if extended to the edge, it would make an undernourished border. Ironically the picture labeled as "an inescutcheon within a bordure" is more like my idea of an orle. If I were to draw "an inescutcheon within a bordure" I wouldn't make the remaining field so much narrower than the bordure.

Such quibbles aside, I think any firm distinction between one and the other is on shaky ground, and I'd prefer to drop such language. Opinions?

It might be good to mention (and better yet to show with examples) that on a field other than a shield (a quarter or a banner) the orle sometimes follows the shape of the field and sometimes is shown in field-shape. —Tamfang (talk) 05:46, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

semantic?

This (and many other of the heraldic articles) would be improved with their semantic interpretations. While some of them are merely familial, I cannot be alone in finding the semantic aspect of heraldic design intriguing. (20040302 (talk) 14:17, 23 April 2024 (UTC))
