Should Paulie actually be listed as a companion. If so, then all of the Franky Family should be as well. He hasn't done anything to special to even be classified that way.

That's true, but Paulie doesn't even fight alongside the Straw Hats and hasn't done anything to help them, and hardly anything is known about him, and there is oviously now no chance of him being considered above Franky.

((His mastery of ropes may be a reference to Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat series. One of Scorpions signature moves is to shoot a piece of rope with a spear edge on it, to drag his opponent nearer himself. ))) - Is it me, or is this comparoison a retarded MK fanboy's desperate stretch to link it in?
