Merge

[edit]

Proposal: merge this article with Carnatic flute. These seem to be the same instrument (with different regional names in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam). The Carnatic flute page should probably be renamed Venu as well. Badagnani 04:18, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the articles can be merged. Sriram 10:59, 5 November 2006

Pulanguzhal

[edit]

It is clear that Pullanguzhal is an extremly obscure term while the term "Venu" is very common. If one is not able to draw a distinction between Venu and Pulanguzhall I feel that it deserves nothing more than a reference such as "venu (A.K.A. Pullanguzhal)"

Thanks for the input. I have a question: do you have Dravidian language skills, in order to know that this is a rarely used term? The thing is that "venu" is a Sanskrit term (thus tied to Hinduism), yet the languages of South India are Dravidian, with likely links to the Indus Valley civilization of ancient times. The thing is, it isn't clear who first played the Carnatic flute, or whether there were indigenous flutes of similar construction used in folk or classical idioms by Dravidian peoples before the emergence of Carnatic music as we know it. So it's a complex question. Badagnani 05:34, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
