Name

[edit]

As per WP:Naming, abbreviations are permitted where "almost exclusively known only by its abbreviation and is widely known and used in that form". As such name used is not "Mag 3" but in capitals and with no separating space, i.e. "MAG3" (whilst technically the substance used is Tc-99m MAG3, it is only ever refered to by most doctors as a MAG3 scan). I shall therefore move the article from Mag 3 scan to MAG3 scan. David Ruben Talk 03:25, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Function

[edit]

It is not written how the scan works technically, i.e.: How can the progress through the renal system be tracked with a gamma camera? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.176.0.54 (talk) 15:30, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GFR cannot be measured

[edit]

The glomerular filtration rate cannot be measured. MAG3 clearance, tubular secretion or renal excretion are completely different from GFR. As a result of radioisotope renography you may get the ratio of radioactivity between both kidneys; their sum always is 100 %. You have to know patient's GFR in advance. For example: Patient's GFR is 50 ml/min. The right:left ratio is 60:40. Then the GFR of the right kidney is 30 ml/min and the GFR of the left kidney is 20 ml/min. --Dr. Hartwig Raeder (talk) 19:41, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
