A comment
Hello, seems that the christening of the "Religion in Uganda" talk page should open with some sort of respectable commencement. Uganda, the "Pearl of Africa," could be noted in many ways as paradigmatic of the human spectrum within Africa as a whole, perhaps even the world. However contrived, religion has played the narrative of its modern history and the subtext of its society. Terms of power, tyranny, humanity, tragedy, hope, freedom, identity, tribalism, stratification, development, and crisis after crisis are all underscored by and inseparable from religious themes.
Herein, the dialogue on religion in Uganda is in fact an attempt to define Uganda. Inasmuch, a profile of Uganda's religious identity is itself a forecast of its future.
That said, this article has quite a few issues. At a glance, it seems kind of odd that a topic of such pertinence is in its infancy. Is this the first "religion in Uganda" article? There wasn't a previous that was vandalized or something?
Otherwise, I want to say "thank you" to whoever put this first draft together. It would be nice if the author could post some comments on the context or basic structure in which he/she intended the article, some explanations on some of the brief facts listed here, and sources where more information could found or referenced (books, websites, etc.).
Both Native/Non-Native English-Speaking Users
Especially with topics like these, some people who know a lot about this subject might not speak perfect English. That's okay. This article is new, so we really need knowledge and information. You can put new information on the article, and if it has English mistakes, other users can correct it later. For example, I can fix or change some of the grammar and structure in this current article, but I can't give very much extra information about Religion in Uganda. I don't know very much about Religion in Uganda, and I don't know where to find really good information.
Best of all, you can use this discussion board. If you make suggestions on important religious issues in Uganda, recommend sources for other users to research, supply extra information about these issues, other users can use that information to improve the current article.
Also, I checked both the Kiswahili and the Luganda language articles. Neither had a "Religion in Uganda" article. Both had articles on "Uganda," but the Swahili article was very short and had no information on religion, and the Luganda article was just two sentences. If you are a native Swahili or Luganda speaker, you can edit the "Uganda" article or create a "Religion in Uganda" article in those languages' Wikipedia, and other users can use that to help make a good English version.
First Review
First of all, I might recommend a change in the style. The article is organized as an introduction and a history, then itemizes brief descriptions about each significant belief system in Uganda. Rather, maybe it would be better to, after "History", create a section that describes religion's role in Uganda, it's significance and interpretation socially, politically, and culturally. Then, have a section that briefly introduces and describes each major religion. Every section after this section would address various issues that have involved religion in Uganda. Now, however, there is not enough information to change the style of the article.
The Hinduism section could use more information, especially on its history in Uganda. I know that pre-Idi Amin, there must have been a lot more Hindus, mostly from India. History section could use much more info. Indigenous beliefs has nearly no information. Obviously, this is a topic on which must be extensive research and information available. Again, please, anyone who can give some information or sources beyond simple statistical information. I don't understand the "Secular" section. It's one sentence, which is actually a fragment. I can't extrapolate enough information from it to complete the sentence. I'll leave it for a few days. If nobody corrects it, I'll cut it out.
The Christianity section has a small discrepancy (same as in the "Uganda" article). This is actually the point that brought me to this article. It gives a percentage of the population who is Christian, then it gives percentage numbers on Catholics, Anglicans, and Evangelicals, but doesn't specify if those secondary numbers are percentages of the total population or among Christians in Uganda. It looks as if all percentage numbers are among total population, but it's not quite clear.
On top of all this, this article mentions or alludes to several points that reflect on larger bodies of significant and very interesting information. I would love to see those start to expand.
List of potential references
Lets use this section to share prospective sources.
For starters, the original article does mention the Ugandan National Census of 2002. I quickly checked that on Google and came up with the Uganda Bureau of Statistics: [www.ubos.org] 武福希 (talk) 07:31, 19 December 2008 (UTC)# 武福希
The CIA databank might also have some helpful bits.
