[edit]I think I have a usage for "replicate" which is different from the usage given for biology and engineering on the article page. It is this. I have created an information system (to keep track of everything in a file) in which access to written Data is often accomplished by accessing (in a notebook, it's not programmed yet) that which contains the Data, called "Data Units." (E.g., Data Unit #1 at page 123 of Discovery Packet 1 is a report by X giving a summary of an interview of Y.) But suppose the interview was recorded. The Data consisting of the audio version of the interview in X's recorder is also in a Data Unit. My audio copy of the interview is also in a Data Unit, as is the transcript of the interview. I propose to create a SubCategory of Data Units called "Replicated Data Units" which would list all the Data Units which have been "replicated" as above including one entitled "Interview of Y by X."
So I think that the Data (i.e., the interview) has been replicated. Does this accord with others usage of the term? (I recognize that it may be said that it is inappropriate to include a summary of the interview with the actual audio interviews--but I don't think so because all versions could be different. An alternate would be to make a SubCategory of "Described Data" which would list all the Data Units which contain the Described Data--but this would not use the term "replicate."
