The Politician was owned by T & J Harrisons of Liverpool, who had regular liner services from the UK to the West Indies, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The last surviving crewmember of the "Poly" was Capt. Maurice Watson, who had been a cadet on board. I sailed with him in Harrisons in 1975.

The 1980s search was an accidental bye-product of the North Sea oil boom, which producdd a fair number of rated divers. I was active in the folk music scene at the time, which included many from the Hebrides, and was welcome as the family had saved many during the Clearances - such things are remembered. I think your estimates of what was recovered may be wildly underestimated, because recoveries started in around 1986 and were not discussed, for obvious reasons. The reason I could be fairly certain it was kosher us because the bottles, which had long since loat their labels, were in green glass, rather than the white then in use, and had started to acquire marine growth: the taste was as mature as you'd expect from 50 year old whisky, and the character of those offering it in friendship not needing to be deceiptful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.199.247.3 (talk) 13:35, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
