The Tibetan holiday Saga Dawa refers both to the holiday (celebrated on the 15th day of the 4th month of the Tibetan calendar) that commemorates the birth, death, and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni and to the entire 4th month (that is, two weeks before and after the holiday proper).

Because the entire month has special significance to Tibetan Buddhism that differs from the Vesak celebrations in South East Asian countries, and because the complicated Tibetan calendar frequently differs from other Asian lunar calendars (for example, Saga Dawa will be celebrated in 2008 on Weds, June 18th, as opposed to Vesak this year on May15th), I don't think it's appropriate to automatically redirect all "Saga Dawa" searches to "Vesak."

Why is this a redirection?[edit]

I agree with whomever wrote the text above that it's not clear why this redirection is here. It seems that Saga Dawa is a separate holiday from Vesak. There is also no mention of "Saga Dawa" in this Vesak article at all, which would prompt people to wonder why they are being redirected to this article! I see from the redirect history that this has been a redirect since 2006. It seems like this could be a separate article. - Dyork (talk) 13:49, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
