SBTi website

[edit]

As of 31 August 2024, the SBTi website appears to be deactivated. It is unclear whether the SBTi itself is still operational. More information is needed in order to update the entry. Roderick Parkes (talk) 09:28, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Domain registration expired on 12th. GoDaddy deactivates products after 19 days.
SBTi itself was active until Friday on both their website and social media.
TBC on Monday. KPiotr (talk) 19:08, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Website seems to be back up. Administrative oversight, nothing juicy. PutTheKettleOn (talk) 12:42, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Carbon offset controversy

[edit]

Not sure that this is relevant to include in the SBTi wiki, but strongly connected is this piece on the Bezos Earth Fund's (BEF) influence of carbon credit markets. The overarching view appears to be that Bezos wants Amazon to hit net zero and carbon offsets are going to be a part of that. Bezos is now wielding his money/power through the BEF in order to legitimise forest based carbon offsets, to legitimise Amazon's net zero strategy.

The connecting piece here is that BEF is a major funder of the SBTi, and is suspected to have strongly pushed for the relaxation of guidance to allow carbon offsets to abate Scope 3 emissions. https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/09/40670507/jeff-bezoss-earth-fund-under-scrutiny-for-potential-influence-on-carbon-credit-market-amid-amazo PutTheKettleOn (talk) 12:48, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
