Was shaft originally about a white guy??

Apparently this source says Shaft was originally not written about a black guy, but about a white guy. Teh story was changed to be about a black guy only when the movie caster selected the black actor. Can anyone confirm? Hughes, Howard (2006). Crime Wave: The Filmgoers' Guide to Great Crime Movies.
