Exodus 1 is a Bible chapter, not a parashah[edit]

There is no justification for Exodus 1, which is also part of the Christian Bible, automatically linking to a rabbinical discussion of a parashah.

A majority of potential users of English Wikipedia are not practicing Jews. I will elaborate: a majority are not Jewish, and not all Jews are practicing Judaism and rabbinical studies, but all these people are potentially interested in the Bible for their own cultural and religious reasons. Therefore, when the topic is a particular Bible verse shared by Jews AND Christians and, frankly, the entire humanity, the Bible passage is of interest, not (just) the parasha & discussion in Judaism. Thank you for considering this.

Should Shemot Rabbah be included on this disambiguation page? 10:56, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

  • No per WP:PARTIAL - this page exists so that people who search Shemot are able to choose between the two works referred to as such: the Book of Exodus (which is, in Hebrew, Shemot) and its opening chapter (which is, in Hebrew, also Shemot). Shemot Rabbah is never, repeat never, referred to as Shemot alone, so it simply does not belong on this disambiguation page. I think the best analogy would be including A Christmas Carol on Christmas (disambiguation): it just doesn't make sense. This is precisely what WP:PARTIAL refers to. Pinging @Theroadislong: and @Quisqualis: who, without explanation, seem to be disagreeing. Amisom (talk) 10:56, 16 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • No; as Amisom notes, it's a partial title match, like Exegesis of the Qur'an is not ambiguous with "Qur'an". -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:47, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes; "Shemot" is a word which might be searched when "Shemot Rabbah" is wanted, particularly by users who are not Judaic scholars. DAB entries don't waste much of Wikipedia's resources, nor would this entry create any confusion for a user, unlike the A Christmas Carol example.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:42, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please show an instance of "Shemot" being used by itself to refer to "Shemot Rabbah". -- JHunterJ (talk) 15:31, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That was not my point. Anyone can search within Wikipedia, not just the cognoscenti.--Quisqualis (talk) 17:21, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But it is the point of WP:D and WP:MOSDAB, particularly WP:PTM. Disambiguation pages disambiguate ambiguity; they don't replace the search function. -- JHunterJ (talk) 15:18, 20 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
