- The "Sin Nombre" hantavirus is carried by rodents, specifically the deer mouse and cotton rat. Humans can be infected if they breathe in particles of dirt or dust which are contaminated by the saliva, urine, or feces of an infected rodent. However, sin nombre hantavirus infections are extremely rare. The Sin nombre hantavirus attacks the lungs -- most hantaviruses attack the kidneys. Infection by the sin nombre hantavirus can cause a lethal pulmonary infection, where the lungs fill with fluid and make breathing difficult or impossible. Symptoms are similar to influenza and can be successfully treated if caught early.
