Talk:Skipper (boating)
Appearance
Skipper is used to identify a CO who has not achieved the rank of "Captain" but has the authority of. Lt JFK was the skipper of PT109 even though he was not a US Navy Captain.
Skipper is also used in mixed service company when a Navy captain and a captain from another service ( US Marines ) are in the same area, to avoid confusion.
In Scottish Gaidhlig the word for a team (or a crew) is 'sgioba' and the leader of the team or crew is 'sgiobair'. It is possible that the skipper has derived from this language as many gaidhlig speaking scots sailed all over the world. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Macljotr (talk • contribs) 22:43, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
