Label Sensor

[edit]

I was curious as to what's actually in the label. I thought it might be a read-only RFID chip, meaning that the VCR would maintain a table of RFIDs and corresponding shows. But if Sony was selling accessories (as mentioned here) then the label itself must be writable. So perhaps some sort of 1-wire chip. Anybody know? I think we should assume for now that the labels contain memory that can be written by the VCR -- otherwise, if the memory function was in the VCR, the labelled tapes could not be taken to another VCR and processed properly.
Thank you for your work on the SmartFile article, DeeperThought -- and especially the photo of the Label Sensor! Sony seems to have abandoned this technology, and left us with no details of the tech history? Please try to add close-up photos of the Label Sensor chip. Are there any markings on the chip? -96.237.7.195 (talk) 12:44, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would be a shame to delete this simple screenshot, since it vividly illustrates the most important aspect of the equipment it pertains to. And it is extremely difficult to imagine Sony objecting...-96.237.7.195 (talk) 11:19, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
