A social bookmarking forum is a web site or service that combines social bookmarking with Internet forum discussion functionality. Apart from socially sharing URLs, social bookmarking forum users may not just rate but also discuss the corresponding web pages, often in threaded discussions. While traditional web-based message board software—once evolved from wholly or partially Internet-independent bulletin boards—in principle had long allowed users to share WWW URLs and engage in online discussions, these older platforms were not centred around that combination as core functionality, which social bookmarking forums are. However, some social bookmarking forums might also allow topical discussions absent a particular shared bookmark.
In the English-speaking world, Slashdot emerged as an early popular (proto-)social bookmarking forum, but was subsequently overtaken in popularity by Digg, then a social bookmarking forum. Later on, reddit became more popular. Other former and current social bookmarking forums include voat and Hacker News.
