Reason for non-deletion
[edit]The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the leading international association in the area of computing, offers a Software System Award that is "Awarded to an institution or individual(s) recognized for developing a software system that has had a lasting influence, reflected in contributions to concepts, in commercial acceptance, or both. The Software System Award carries a prize of $10,000. Financial support for the Software System Award is provided by IBM." ACM Software System Award — Jonathan Bowen 04:19, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- This does not mean that a "Software System" is anything more than software. I wouldn;t even class it as marketing, as it is nothing more than IBM and ACM trying to sound "fancy". I really do not feel it requires it's own article. --Jimmi Hugh 04:37, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Many research groups study software systems. A selection of these have been added to the page. — Jonathan Bowen 17:04, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I've removed the speedy deletion tag since this does not fit a speedy deletion criterion; it's certainly not patent nonsense. You can take it to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion if you still believe it should be deleted. —Celithemis 13:09, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Merge with computer software?
[edit]This is a confused article. The first sentence doesn't make much sense. The 2nd sentence says it is often used as a synonym, which suggests merger potential. The rest of the first paragraph mentions 2 things it is "related to" — yes but what is it? And does not most computer software form a software system or part thereof?
The fact that ACM and various research groups use the term — in some undefined way — means little. Where are the reputable definitions? This article needs a good, clear definition and references, otherwise it is a candidate for merger. Nurg 04:17, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- Agree with all of the above. --M4gnum0n (talk) 10:05, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
- Note: I have clarified the difference between "software system" and "software", added references in the article (Ian Sommerville's widely used Software Engineering book defines the difference in Chapter 1 for example), and removed the notice. — Jonathan Bowen (talk) 14:48, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
- Also needed to separate system software anyway. History2007 (talk) 09:03, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
