Although some readers were mystified after finishing the book as to who the real winner (for the governorship of Connecticut) was, it's obvious that Fletcher Davenport was the winner. Because, when the mayor was standing with both brothers on his left and right, Nat was standing on the right and Fletcher left. But then the mayor turned around to face the two brothers, and, in the process, had Fletcher on his right and Nat on his left. And then, he congratulated the person standing on his right, which was Fletcher.
You could add that this is also alluded to by the reference to the winner always picking heads. Earlier in the plot, it is revealed that Fletcher would have picked heads in a coin toss during his run for the senate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.237.83.123 (talk) 04:38, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- Indeed. That's my appraisal of the last pages of the book as well. "Fletcher" wins. -- fdewaele, 26 September 2010, 18:20
