Proposed move to US Army Africa

[edit]

Favor Since it has already been well cited in the article, by myself, that the SETAF has been disbanded, and reorganized as US Army Africa, the article name and information should change to reflect its current operational status.--207.114.206.48 (talk) 02:36, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page name “US Army Africa” should be changed back to “Southern European Task Force.” Although SETAF has a new mission, its name has not yet changed. The two references cited (news articles announcing SETAF’s new mission) are ambiguous regarding the name change, so I checked SETAF’s web site and saw that SETAF news articles are variously using “SETAF” and “SETAF-US Army Africa.” I then contacted the SETAF Public Affairs Office (PAO) directly and received this response by e-mail on 20 Jan, confirmed by telephone 22 Jan with the SETAF Public Affairs Officer:

“Our name is still SETAF. Our command has added the U.S. Army Africa to clarify our new mission because there is a lot of confusion about us keeping the SETAF name. DA [Department of the Army] has not decided what our new name will be, and we expect to be SETAF for at least another year.”

and on 23 Jan received this from the SETAF PAO:
As far as the official name, it is still "United States Army Southern European Task Force". And your statement is correct: "the terms "U.S. Army Africa" and "SETAF-U.S. Army Africa" are sometimes used just for clarity, depending on the audience, to convey SETAF's new role or mission." Although I would like to say the name "U.S. Army Africa" is now used MORE than "sometimes". As I have discussed with you, within our PAO shop, we are pushing "SETAF-U.S. Army Africa" to capture our audiences (Italians know SETAF, U.S. audiences have to know our new role in Africa).

The new SSI for US Army Africa can be found at this website.[1] --207.114.206.48 (talk) 16:33, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That page does not show the shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) worn by Soldiers assigned to SETAF (Caserma Ederle, Vicenza, Italy). Those Soldiers wear the SETAF patch. To quote from a 21 Jan email from SETAF PAO, "That patch is for people assigned to AFRICOM directly - probably referring to U.S. Army personnel assigned to AFRICOM headquarters." -- Matt R.
