Contradictions in the sources[edit]

Greene & Massignani don't say anything about a second attempt to breakout from Cartagena, only that Lobo and his ships had to re-coal at Gibraltar after the battle. Wilson, in Vol. I of Battleships in Action, matches O'Shea's account of another breakout attempt, but I have the feeling that he used O'Shea as a source. Wilson does say that Numancia and Mendez Nunez bombarded Alicante on 6 October, but that's not mentioned by anyone else. These sorts of contradictions are why I've never really worked these ships and this battle.
