Fools! Why turn 'spelunk' into a pejorative? I don't mind the appropriation - as a geologist I think my opinion ought have at least a smidge of sway. 'Spelunk' even touts the proper spel prefix. In any case it's far more creative than transmogrifying 'cave' into a verb. "Cavers rescue spelunkers" ??? Hah! Have at you!
>> since the 1960s, however most "cavers" regard [spelunker] as a derogatory term
I did a lot of caving from 1969 until 1989. At no time did I ever hear any caver take the word "spelunker" as a pejorative. It just wasn't a word we used about us. When I told non-cavers I was a "caver" a common reactions was, "You're a what?" "I explore caves." "Oh, you're a spelunker." "Caver" is apparently not a word in general usage in English whereas "spelunker" is.
>> Famous Spelunker's include Elijah Ginter and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
You must be kidding. Someone needs to pull that.
