Going to be reviewing this article today. None of the quick fail criteria apply here, so let's go!
Criteria
[edit]Good Article Status - Review Criteria
A good article is—
- Well-written:
- (a) the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct; and
- (b) it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.[1]
- Verifiable with no original research:
- (a) it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline;
- (b) reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose);[2]
- (c) it contains no original research; and
- (d) it contains no copyright violations or plagiarism.
- Broad in its coverage:
- (a) it addresses the main aspects of the topic;[3] and
- (b) it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
- Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
- Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. [4]
- Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio: [5]
- (a) media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content; and
- (b) media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions.[6]

Discussion
[edit]Regarding criterion 1a
[edit]Lede
[edit]- "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a 2018 American computer-animated superhero film featuring the..." Considering the context, I think there should be a comma between "film" and "featuring".
- "It marks the directorial debut of Persichetti and Rothman. It stars the voices of..." Short sentences, in my opinion, don't work well in the lede. Merge the sentences.
- "In the film, Miles Morales joins other Spider-Men from various dimensions who team up to save New York City from Kingpin." I think there should be more context as to who Kingpin is.
- "The film required up to 140 animators, the largest crew used by Sony Pictures Animation." The second part of this sentence sounds off. I would remove it.
- Done all. Rusted AutoParts 01:19, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Plot
[edit]- There seem to be quite a few relinks in this.
- Could you elaborate on this? Rusted AutoParts 01:20, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
- Words such as Miles Morales and Kingpin have been linked in this section, even though they were already linked in the lede. Thanks, Thatone
weirdwikier Say hi 05:49, 10 March 2020 (UTC)- I feel this is a common thing that's occurred in other superhero related GA articles. Like Thor: Ragnarok. Rusted AutoParts 19:45, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
- Words such as Miles Morales and Kingpin have been linked in this section, even though they were already linked in the lede. Thanks, Thatone
Cast
[edit]- The formatting is unconsistent here. Many of the cast members' descriptions are either not indented or have too much indentation. Some of them go to a new line to start the description; others just keep going on that line.
- That's in part to certain characters having additional information added to their entry. This is another common situation with superhero film articles. Rusted AutoParts 19:47, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Development
[edit]- "Miller said the film would feel different from previous Spider-Man films, and 'will stand on its own as a unique film-going experience.'" There is a change of tense here. I would change it to "Miller said the film would feel different from previous Spider-Man films, and would 'stand on its own as a unique film-going experience.'"
- "Peter Ramsey was co-directing the film by that point." This sentence sounds informal.
- "Lord described directors Ramsey as 'the action guy', Rothman as 'the comedy guy' and Persichetti as 'the poet'". There is no citation here.
- Done all. Rusted AutoParts 19:50, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Writing
[edit]- "The first full cut of animatics and storyboards for the film was over two-hours long..." Remove the hyphen between "two" and "hours".
- "Christina kept us honest, [a]s five boys making a movie, it was really good to have another filmmaker there going, 'I don’t think you guys want to do it like this."'" Here, the single and double quotation marks are formatted incorrectly. See MOS:QWQ.
- Done all. I removed the second point's sentence altogether. Rusted AutoParts 19:53, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Casting
[edit]- "Shameik Moore was cast as Miles Morales in April 2017, along with Liev Schreiber as the film's unspecified main villain." Change "the film's unspecified main villain" to "the film's then-unspecified main villain".
Music and soundtrack
[edit]- No problems here
Animation and design
[edit]- "as well as visual effects for all prior Spider-Man films beforehand." Remove the word "beforehand".
- "Rather than using animation principles like squash and stretch they came up with substitute versions of them; 'so that in texture and...'" Remove the semi-colon.
- "Spider-Ham being designed as "cartoony" as possible." What is this quoting?
- I find it's to highlight the different style of animation the character needed in comparison to the others. As "cartoony" as possible I find makes sense, though I could do it as "as cartoony as possible" too. Rusted AutoParts 19:57, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
- "having worked on both the 2002 Spider-Man film and the first Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs film..." Here, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (CwaCofM) is linked. I think this may be WP:OVERLINKING as there is a link to the CwaCofM franchise a few lines back. More of a judgement call.
- As it's the only time the film is linked in the article, I feel it fine to keep linked. Rusted AutoParts 19:57, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Release
[edit]- "In April 2015, Sony had made its first official announcement that a new animated Spider-Man film was in development, with a scheduled release date for July 20, 2018. It would be the first animated Spider-Man feature film, and would be independent of the timelines of other Spider-Man universe films. At the end of 2015, the release date was changed to December 21, and was moved up by one week two years later." This repeats what has already been said. I would remove it.
- I'm not sure if it does repeat what was said. It establishes it had been moved around several time prior to it's official release date. Rusted AutoParts 19:59, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Marketing/Home media
[edit]- No problems here
Box office
[edit]- "finishing first at the box office and marking the best-ever December opening..." Remove the hyphen between "best" and "ever".
- "The weekend following its Best Animated Picture win..." Clarify what this is from.
- Done all. Rusted AutoParts 20:00, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Critical response
[edit]- "gave the film a rare average grade..." Remove "rare".
- Done Rusted AutoParts 20:01, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
- This was some exceptionally awkward phrasing (SNAFU). The Cinemascore grade is an average of what each audience member gives as a score. It is rare to receive a A+ grade from Cinemascore.
- Remove both words "rare average" or remove the word "average" because details of how the score is calculated is better explained in the Cinemascore article, and when reading quickly it can easily be misread to imply it that the A+ is somehow "average". I'm going to edit this to remove both words, even though I agree it is rare to get a grade A+ (because someone will probably quibble over how rare this actually is). -- 109.77.215.39 (talk) 05:50, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Industry response-the end of the article
[edit]- No problems here
Final comments
[edit]Well done so far with this article! Going to review the refs in a couple of days. Thanks, Thatoneweirdwikier Say hi 19:30, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Regarding criterions 2a and 2b
[edit]Going to be reviewing the references now...
No problems that I could find! Going to add the tag now, well done! Thanks, Thatoneweirdwikier Say hi 20:09, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- ^ Compliance with other aspects of the Manual of Style, or the Manual of Style mainpage or subpages of the guides listed, is not required for good articles.
- ^ Either parenthetical references or footnotes can be used for in-line citations, but not both in the same article.
- ^ This requirement is significantly weaker than the "comprehensiveness" required of featured articles; it allows shorter articles, articles that do not cover every major fact or detail, and overviews of large topics.
- ^ Vandalism reversions, proposals to split or merge content, good faith improvements to the page (such as copy editing), and changes based on reviewers' suggestions do not apply. Nominations for articles that are unstable because of unconstructive editing should be placed on hold.
- ^ Other media, such as video and sound clips, are also covered by this criterion.
- ^ The presence of images is not, in itself, a requirement. However, if images (or other media) with acceptable copyright status are appropriate and readily available, then some such images should be provided.
