Convicts
I am a little uncertain about what this article should contain. Does the term "Swan River Colony" refer to the entire British colony in Western Australia, including those sub-colonies not at the Swan River? Or does it refer only to the colony established at the Swan River, as distinct from the sub-colonies that were established at King George Sound, Augusta, York, etcetera? I prefer the latter interpretation, but I am not sure that it is historically correct. If the latter interpretation is correct, then the information on convicts should be removed to History of Western Australia, since convicts were deployed throughout the various sub-colonies, not just the Swan River Colony. - It has come to my attention that "Swan River Colony" was only the official name of the colony until 1832, during which time its lands were the vicinity of the Swan River, and the land south of it. In 1832 its official name became "Western Australia" and its lands were extended to the modern-day boundaries of the state of WA. I am therefore of the view that this article should cover the exploration, planning and establishment of the colony, but not later issues such as convictism. These more properly belong in History of Western Australia. I have removed the references to convictism and 1840s agriculture. Hesperian 00:56, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Aboriginal people and pre 1827 history
I am concerned that in this account there is no mention at all of the Aboriginal people who lived in the area before European settlement. Nor is there any link to Aboriginal articles (Whadjuk, Yagan etc) that are important. This article perpetuates the white racist story that Western Australian settlement was purely a matter of Europeans John D. Croft 10:57, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Something like the real first paragraph of History of Adelaide would seem the ideal. I would also like to see a bit more on the Dutch and French that were in the area before the English settled it, but I don't quite have the knowledge (or references). As I saw already mentioned, it is not clear what should go into this article.Gazjo 02:45, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Having said that, I have now added a section on early European exploration, and tried to make it flow to the next section about the settlement. An Aboriginal History section flowing into the European exploration would seem like a logical section to add in the future. Gazjo 12:05, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
