Why is it stated that the French explanation is unlikely because of the TREVI being a British initiative? The British words corresponding to the French ones make up exactly the same acronym as the French. Of course, the other explanation sounds much more interesting, no doubt about it! :-)

In English the acronym would be TREIV. However, if you look at the names and acronyms of the various structures and working groups in the EU you can see that these are almost always made in the prefferred language (English/French) of the initiator. That's why some acronyms are completely incomprehensible unless you think of them in French. It is almost unthinkable that a French initiative would have a English name and acronym et vice versa.
